“Blocking” is too overloaded in improv. From most common to least:
Blocking can mean to deny someone’s offer. When someone doesn’t do “yes, and,” it’s often called a block. I’ve also heard it called a “denial”.
Blocking also refers to actors’ placement on stage. In the scripted theatre world, the director or stage manager will go over the blocking of every scene. It’s not talked about as often in improv, since improvisers decide their own blocking in the moment. Also called “staging”.
Blocking can also just mean blocking someone from view. To avoid confusion, you can call it “standing in front of someone”.
Blocking NEVER means “the use or manipulation of stage cubes,” except I did once hear someone call it that. Please never do this. We already have too many words for it. I know someone’s going to start saying this specifically because of this blog post. You’re allowed to punch them, and they’re not allowed to bl—uh… obstruct your fist in any way.
